Exercise is something that’s essential for every living thing’s health! So you probably want to keep the senior in your life active and healthy by encouraging a daily exercise routine.
How do you do that, though, when your aging loved one has arthritis or severe mobility issues? Let’s start with some fun and effective low-impact exercises!
The most basic of low-impact exercises is walking. Even with limited mobility, this is an exercise that most people can do for a little bit every day.
You can encourage your family members who are out of shape or out of practice to slowly get into the habit of walking over the course of a couple of weeks. Even finding 10 minutes each day to do a bit of walking can make a huge difference!
Seniors who are wheelchair-bound or need a walker to get around might find a daily walk to be a taxing or even impossible option. Luckily, there are some great exercise options that can be done while seated!
Start with some upper body chair exercises to strengthen the arms and improve upper body range of motion. Warm up with some simple arm stretches and shoulder circles.
Once stretched, use light weights to perform a seated row. Do this by pulling the elbows back and squeezing the shoulder blades together. Complete a few reps, and then do some slow shoulder rolls to cool down the triceps and work the trapezius muscles.
Finally, strengthen the core by doing some seated abdominal twists.
Swimming is famed for being a low-impact full body workout. To keep things fresh, your loved one can add some different swimming exercises to his or her water workout!
Seniors can strengthen their swimming propulsion and stretch their legs using a kickboard or the side of the pool. Try quick and vigorous kicks or slow leg swings.
Limited leg movement? Try standing or treading water and doing arm circles, arm curls or chest flies. Enhance this exercise by including water weights!
